Hands-on-
Exhibitions

The annual hands-on exhibition aims to promote knowledge, creativity, critical thinking and independence in thought and action. The exhibitions make topics from science, art, everyday culture and architecture tangible and perceptible for children aged 6 to 12.

Once upon a Time... The Middle Ages!

A hands-on exhibition for children ages 6 to 12

Brave knights, noble castle maidens, proud cities, splendid castles and cathedrals—this is how we like to imagine the Middle Ages. But this time long past was also shaped by war, famine, plagues, hard labor, and bitter poverty.
Running time:
  • 07. March 2013 - 16. February 2014

    ZOOM Exhibition

How did people live in the city or in the countryside? What professions did they carry out, what did their homes look like, how did they dress? At this exhibition, the children can try some honey, mint coins, visit an apothecary, and get to know other guilds. They can also learn about everyday life on a medieval farm or what working in an impenetrable forest was like. In the outhouse they find out how clean things were in a castle, or test out their own agility on a wooden horse. They can design their own rosette or practice writing with a feather quill. On the weekends, fitting for the season, new activities in the exhibition will be on offer. During October, the children can make clay figurines using from clay from the pit in the courtyard. In November, healing lotions will be prepared using herbs from the medieval cloister garden. In December, the children can bake gingerbread and roll candles, and in January they can make medieval toys.
